Public Enemies (2009, R)

Directed by: Michael Mann

Grade: B—

There’s a unique style surrounding crime films, gangster films in particular, that make them memorable standouts in the world of cinema.  To name a few: the Godfather and its sequels, the Untouchables, Once Upon a Time in America, Goodfellas, etc.  There are many more to name for sure.  Alas though, Public Enemies lacks this unique style.  What I mean to say is, well, Public Enemies had every potential to be one of the year’s defining movies.  There are lots of noteworthy points to make about Public Enemies though: it’s generally well directed, the firefights are well placed, and the three lead actors all deliver some very fine acting performances.  Then there are other scenes that drag, and unlike other gangster films, Public Enemies fails to fully engage the viewer or to warrant any strong emotion between the story and the audience.  I still enjoyed Public Enemies for what it was, and I suspect that I may watch it again in the future (I’ve seen it twice already before coming to my final verdict of the film), but alas, it’s very unlikely that this will ever find a place among the collection of the great crime dramas.  B—
