The Patriot (2000, R)

Directed by: Roland Emmerich

Grade: C+

One day, a lot of my family was gathered around a campfire outside of our lakeside cabin, when we started talking about our favorite movie.  Someone mentioned the Patriot, and when I asked what other people thought about it, my uncle said he would give the Patriot an ‘A’ grade for entertainment value.  When I asked him what he would grade it overall (acting, direction, cinematography, production value, etc), he stated that he thought it was very well made and would still give it an ‘A’.  Yes, the Patriot is generally well made and, for the most part, entertaining.  However, it’s also standard Hollywood fare that obeys all the normal Hollywood rules just as we would expect, without any new surprises at all.  The principal villain feels totally out of place, a lot of the dialogue is clichéd, many scenes are overly dramatic and now that I think about it, the Patriot doesn’t really bring anything all that new to the war genre.  Even still, I must state again that the Patriot is well-made, and deserves to be watched due to that fact that it’s one of the very few, few movies set during the American Revolution, which alone should make it well worth viewing even for all of its clichés and flaws.
