Tombstone (1993, R)

Directed by: George P. Cosmatos

Grade: C+

Tombstone is a standard western that’s more concerned about style over material, but nonetheless, there is no one to deny that it delivers unyielding entertainment!  Just as long as you aren’t a strong admirer of the western genre.  Those who are may deride Tombstone for its many historical inaccuracies for the sake of making for a more ample, audience-friendly flick.  Tombstone is a true ‘wild west’ flick and includes enough one-liners and shootouts to please most everybody.  Tombstone sometimes feels almost like an action western (though fortunately not to the extent of the agonizing Young Guns), especially in the last act that presents a repetitive use of never-ending shootouts.  I wonder if Tombstone really was taking itself seriously, but at least it delivers most of the goods an audience would want.  Tombstone was released at about the same time as the competing western Wyatt Earp.  Between the two, Wyatt Earp is indisputably the more true to the western history it was presenting, but unfortunately, is also the far duller.
