Directed by: Robert Zemeckis
Grade: C+
I’ll give Contact credit for being so ambitious in its own self way; it wouldn’t be so easy to find compromises between religion and science. The topics Contact covers have value to the film industry in that you really couldn’t find too many other motion pictures that would present such concessions. So I give Contact some tribute for that. The problem is that these topics (religion vs. science) are very hard topics to cover and thus come to conclusions to, as director Zemeckis wouldn’t want to hurt supporters of either side. As a result, Zemeckis takes no sides: some characters in the film support the scientific evidence, and other characters maintain their strong faith in God. Thus, Contact finds no firm resolution to its story, and therefore feels wholly incomplete. This is still not a film to simply pass over though, as it still manages to tender a few unyielding moments sprinkled throughout its timeframe, and those moments are ultimately what keeps the narrative afloat.
C+
