First Blood (1982, R)

Directed by: Ted Kotcheff

Grade: C

As achievements in filmmaking, the Rambo series isn’t really anything all that special, though as violent action flicks to pass the time, they hold some value (with the exception of Rambo III.  That was just silly).  First Blood, the first installment in the series, differentiates from the three sequels in that it isn’t much of an action film; rather, it serves better purpose as a post-Vietnam physiological thriller.  This is a movie that had some promise to it, but becomes faulted in its murky cinematography and inability to even try to transcend to anything greater then it was.  Fortunately, this is a movie that does raise a few questions for us, even should they lack enough coherent depth.  For all its errors, First Blood is still entertaining and worth a watch on one of those rainy days--that alone makes it a passable film.
