Die Hard 2, Die Harder (1990, R)

Directed by: Renny Harlin

Grade: C+

Personally, I think that John McClane should consider quitting his job as a cop and joining a Counter-Terrorism Unit.  McClane, in the first two entries in the Die Hard series, has become very skilled at disposing of terrorists one way or another.  Or maybe McClane would be better off as a cop anyway, finding the terrorists by sheer coincidence.  The first Die Hard has been much-admired as one of the most paramount action flicks out there, and while I did find appreciation in it for its steady stream of thrilling action scenes, while keeping itself upright as a stable action flick, I cannot help but carp about some qualities of the film, such as the utter idiocy of several of the supporting characters that make McClane look like a mathematical genius and gunslinger combined.  Nevertheless, I was still entertained enough by Die Hard to write a generally positive, even if very brief, review. There are many sequences in Die Hard 2 that are, while exciting, still so implausible we begin to wonder why McClane makes it through the movie with only a few bloody scratches, escaping without a bullet wound or a broken leg—all while he blows away submachine wielding bad guys with a 9mm pistol.  For these reasons, Die Hard 2 is about a pace below the original.  Therefore, there are no redeeming factors to be found in Die Hard 2.  As an action film, Die Hard 2 distributes up-to-the-minute entertainment.  When the ride was over, I was content with what I saw, but was also just as ready to turn in for the night.
