Directed by: Clint Eastwood
Grade: C+
Obviously influenced by the Spaghetti westerns in which he had previously starred, Clint Eastwood's 1973 High Plains Drifter is an errie western with aphotic complexities. Eastwood's character is almost an exact replica of the nameless gunslinger he portrayed in the Man with No Name trilogy. Many elements of the plot are left almost entirely ambiguous, a style that Eastwood would hold to many of his motion pictures. That said, there is little, if any, moral depth to the characters at all. However, Eastwood manages to balance things out by tackling subjects such as extreme justice, vengeance and betrayal. This is a creditable flick for all Eastwood fans, though otherwise, it's limited as an overall effective western. C+
