Directed by: John Hughes
Grade: A—
There are enough inconsistencies in Planes, Trains and Automobiles to name for sure. But as a comedy, it doesn’t become too hard to put aside those narrative flaws and enjoy Planes, Trains and Automobiles for all that it is. It’s a very amusing, loveable movie that is a step above other comedies for the fact that it has good intentions. Not in the clichéd form, but perhaps Planes, Trains and Automobiles is more vibrant in its appealing nature by actually standing up for the decent values in life it means to convey. Even so, the content delivered is not much different from other comedic flicks from Hughes. There are enough crude references and foul language to guarantee the film the R-rating it deserves, but even so, Planes, Trains and Automobiles is drop dead hilarious! Martin and Candy work great together, carrying the film on their shoulders the entire way, and without both of them, I must say that the movie wouldn’t have worked as great as it did. The wit and comedic talent are thoroughly funny, and the message it conveys is strong. As a result, let's just forget about flaws and inconsistencies to just, maybe for once, sit back and enjoy the film. To this very day, Planes, Trains and Automobiles must by all means be considered a classic of the comedy genre, a treasure to not be forgotten.
