Poseidon (2006, PG-13)

Directed by: Wolfgang Petersen

Grade: D+

Once we are willing to accept the fact that Wolfgang Petersen is a director who made his marks in Das Boot and in the Line of Fire, but slowly has lost that rank of honor over the years, then we have an excuse for dismissing Poseidon as popcorn entertainment taken to an extreme level of insanity.  Even on mild, practical terms Poseidon really wants to be Titanic taken to a far more adventurous level.  I’m not so sure that I’m willing to accept Poseidon as that kind of film.  There are a lot of overdone CGI effects and a lot of disaster action—but where is all the characterization to fill everything in?  Sadly, Poseidon is a lost cause.
