Directed by: Sydney Pollack
Grade: A
In my collection of Significant Films, this is the only movie that I can usually never find in other lists of the greatest films ever made. I recognize Jeremiah Johnson as a masterpiece, simply because, there isn't much that's wrong about it! It's beautifully filmed in Utah's Rocky Mountains, it's not too long, nor too short, expertly paced, very well performed, and faultlessly directed. As the title suggests, the film follows the adventurous story of, well, Jeremiah Johnson, a former US Army man who has seen fighting experience and hardships in the Mexican War. Evidently though, not even that can prepare him for the new life that he chooses to take as a mountain man, living off of mother nature in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. Johnson faces and overcomes enough trials and hardships to become a legend of the mountains. In general, movies that follow and focus upon one character are much more centered then those that tackle a variety of characters and subplots. If we take a look at this movie from that aspect, then Jeremiah Johnson is a very focused film, one that's determined to become a great movie from the start...and succeeds.
